Gamlog2 - Free Program for Calculating U3O8%
The original GAMLOG program was written by J.H. Scott in 1962
for the IBM 7090 computer. The purpose was to quantitatively interpret
natural gamma-ray and gamma-gamma logs to obtain grade and thickness
of uranium-bearing intervals selected from down-hole gamma logs.
Marshall Miller & Associates has revived the program and offers
it for free on a CD that will run on modern computers.
The Gamlog2 program uses Scott's algorithms to calculate U3O8%
from 0.5-foot and 1-foot interval gamma logs. Gamlog2 is improved
over the original program in the "background-to-background"
evaluation methodology to allow enough data to be read in for
holes as deep as 4000 feet. Scott's program was constrained by
computer memory limitations of the day.
The program runs in a DOS window and writes the output to a readable
text file. Input consists of entering the input file name and
the tops and bottoms of the intervals to be calculated.
The program reads in entire drill holes and automatically extends
the weighted averaging to include the actual values three intervals
above and below the anomaly for 0.5 foot readings and two intervals
above and below the anomaly for 1 foot readings. So it is truly
using the "background-to-background" evaluation method.

Surfer® Version 9
Until July 31, 2009, the newest version of Surfer can be purchased
for $599 ($699 regular price) from Golden software. Surfer is
a contouring and 3D surface mapping program that includes 3D wireframe,
vector, image, shaded relief, and post maps. Virtually all aspects
of your maps can be customized to produce exactly the presentation
you want.
The version has many new features, including:
Transparency - Make colors, map layers, fill patterns,
images, and missing data for image maps and shaded relief maps
transparent. You have full control over the opacity percentage.
Import and Export Georeferenced Images - Save time and
frustration by importing georeferenced image files in their real
world coordinates, ready to combine with other map types. Also
export maps in georeferenced images files.
Add, Remove and Edit Individual Objects in Base Maps -
Surfer 9 adds the ability to expand base maps to show all the
individual components of the base map. You can add, copy, paste
and delete objects from a base map, or double click on a particular
object to edit its individual properties. You can reshape polylines
and polygons in a base map and globally change the properties
for all items in the map.
Convert the Projection of Data in the Worksheet - Project
data from more than 1,500 predefined coordinate systems or define
custom projection or datum.
Length and Area Calculations - Surfer reports the area
and perimeter length of polygons and the length of polylines in
a base map.
Move Individual Labels on Post Map with Mouse - Eliminate
overlapping and unreadable post map labels by effortlessly moving
individual post labels to new locations by dragging and dropping
them with your mouse.
Save Classes for Classed Post Map - Create your classes
for a classed post map exactly how you want them, and save the
settings to a file.
And lots more.
A limited-feature demo version of Surfer can be downloaded from

NeuraLog
NeuraLog offers automated digitizing to convert log curves such
as gamma and resistivity to a digital format. Automated depth
gridding and curve tracing expedite this once tedious task of
capturing log data. Image warp/stretch are corrected by internal
algorithms calculated from the logs grid model. Real-time
visual verification shows how the curve trace directly overlays
the image original. Once curves are traced, a log quality index
value is computed, giving you an indication of the quality of
each curve as well as total log quality. Curve calculations are
available for basic log petrophysics, and curve mathematics allow
you to depth shift or perform inverse operations. Finally, LAS
data accuracy can be confirmed with the Virtual Light Table. The
process and quality checking allows you to verify and edit log
data as it is being digitized.
The tracing software was developed for the petroleum industry
but would have application for tracing logs such as gamma and
resistivity. For more information contact Neuralog, Inc., 4800

Simul8
SIMUL8 is a general simulation modeling software. It provides
an integrated environment for working with simulation models.
The Standard Edition has a "point & click" graphical
user interface. Every SIMUL8 simulation is created by dragging
and dropping the basic simulation objects on screen. Detail can
then be added to each of these objects to build a simulation which
represents your process.
The software has been used for mining applications. INCO used
it to investigate output & process improvements. The simulation
included dynamic links to a metallurgical model to ensure proper
levels within the furnaces to feed the converters. In addition,
crane movements were optimized to minimize converter delays and
maximize production output. The system has the capability of scheduling
and monitoring converter aisle activities for equipment on a real-time
basis, and was used for capacity planning, power consumption,
and feed rate analysis.
Falconbridge used the software to create a detailed production
model to accurately capture the flow of material through two mines,
and the utilization of materials handling equipment. Routing information,
equipment parameters, processing times, and shift patterns were
incorporated into the model. From the production plan and waste
production forecasts, the model generated a stope schedule that
governed which areas of the mine came on-line at any given time.
This simulation could be used to quickly evaluate the mine's output
when different operating parameters and rules were implemented.
This simulation allows the company to predict future mine output,
and thus the feasibility of mine expansion to a risk-free, flexible,
and intuitive process. It helped to not only prove that the target
ore throughput could be reached; it also helped planners to determine
the levels of equipment and staffing that would be needed to reach
these goals.
