3D Mine Surveying Revolutionized with True Color

Darling Environmental & Surveying, Ltd, located in Tucson, Arizona, is revolutionizing mine surveying with the use of state-of-the-art 3D true color terrestrial LiDAR. With three different 3D scanners (a Leica scan station, a Riegl Z360 w/ a 6 mm LD3 camera and an Optech Ilris) the Company is constantly on the go.  Using this revolutionary technology, Darling recently scanned a decline in a West Virginia coal mine to determine whether sufficient excavation had occurred for conveyor structures to be brought into the underground site.

The scan data was able to provide very precise cross sections every 8 feet along this 2500-foot decline. Darling also scanned pit walls and slides at several Nevada gold and silver mines to assess stability, underground workings in an Arizona copper mine to enable engineers to design conveyance systems, an existing mill about to be renovated with modern circuitry, a mine truck shop and 3 miles of cliff to monitor potential subsidence from underground mining, tailings reclamation to measure thickness of the protective covering, and much more.

As-builts of mills, shafts and mine tunnels are quick and accurate. As-builts of mill facilities and 3D models can be produced with 6 mm accuracy, well within tolerances for design engineers. Measurements of pit walls, monitoring of slope failures and calculations of volumes can be acquired from safe distances without interrupting operations.  3D scanning has proven to be a cost effective method of mine surveying.  For more information, contact Darling Environmental & Surveying, Ltd. by calling (520) 298-2725 or visit their website at www.darlingltd.com.  Visit their exhibit (Booth #921) at the Northwest Mining Association Annual Meeting in Spokane in December 2007.
