SME/NSSGA Student Design Competition - March 30, 2009

The 2008/2009 SME/NSSGA Student Design Competition was recently conducted at the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. The competition was a tremendous success this year due to the continued enthusiasm and hard work from the participating schools. This year a total of 10 teams from 6 schools participated in the competition. The Student Design Committee feel that this year was our best year yet and we have received a lot of great feedback from the faculty and students which will help us make next year even better! Alex Duerksen, a student on Virginia Tech's "Old Dominion Crushing" team, had some great things to say about the competition:

"The design competition has been one of my favorite parts of my mining engineering education. […] The process was very arduous and intense, but winning a national engineering competition made up for the exhaustion. I learned a tremendous amount, not only about designing a mine, but about working as a team, maximizing group strengths, and communicating (written or verbal) in a professional setting. " .

Congratulations to Virginia Tech for winning the competition! The Virginia Tech "Old Dominion Crushing" Team included Alek Duerksen, Aaron Noble, Caroline Relyea, William Rose, Robert Stieber, and Andrew Storey.

Congratulations to the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology "Hardrockers" Team for placing second in the competition! The team included Ryan Horton, Karen Ross, Josh Dedic, Jacinta Klabenes, Americo Zuzunaga and Brandon Lampe

Congratulations to the Missouri University of Science & Technology for placing third in the competition! The "Quarry Consultants" Team included Casey Slaughter, Cory Smith, Josiah Martin, Kyle Barteau, Trevor Bollmann, and Zach DeGraffenreid.

All of the teams that participated should be very proud of their accomplishment and effort. The level of competition continues to increase each year - and the judges' job is getting harder!

About the Competition:

The SME/NSSGA Student Design Competition is an academic event focused on actual data from an aggregate company. The competition begins during the first semester of the academic school year. The first round is a written engineering solution of the problem statement. All teams use AggFlow software and various mine design/CAD programs to come up with their solutions. The submitted solutions are judged by a group of industry professionals. This year, the judges were Steve Demeyer of Luck Stone Corporation, Eric Achelpohl of Vulcan Material Company, Deb Keeland of Granite Construction Inc., Jeff Gray of Telsmith Inc., and Wes Johnson of Freeport-McMoRan. The judges choose the top six teams to participate in the second round, which is an oral presentation given to the judges and audience members. The presentations were held at the SME annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.
